Mr John Turnpenny, formerly of Crescent House (1937-1941), was recently granted the honour of Freeman of Dover by Dover Town Council. He and the two other recipients were the first towns people to receive this award for over 40 years.
John Turnpenny, an Old Dovorian (1937 to 1941), has lived in Dover for the majority of his life. He has been a Governor of the College, a local businessman (the London Road funiture firm Turnpenny Brothers Ltd), a Justice of the Peace and has a long standing commitment to many societies and local interest groups such as the Gateway Residents’ Association and the Chamber of Commerce.
Whenever possible he attends and supports the OD golf matches, and all the College concerts held in the refectory. John is the regional organiser for the Dover Group.

I have just heared the sad news that John Turnpenny has passed away.
John, who has been suffering from pancreatic cancer, was in Kearnsey Nursing Home. Mike Lightbourn and I were due to visit him there tomorrow afternoon.
John was one of the nicest and the most prominent ODs I have met. I have known him since he asked me to join the OD Committee in the early 1980s. As Graham Turner wrote at the end of last year “John has probably done more for the College than anyone else in the last 80 years”
John, who was in Crescent from 1937-41 was a past Chairman of the Governors and President of the OD Club. He ran the OD Dover Group, regularly attended the OD London Party and the College and remained an active supporter of the College and Club throughout his life.
A great OD and a sad day!
I am a little surprised that the above summary of John`s past or present is so short.
John has probably done more for The College than any one else over the last 80 years.!!
He was Chairman of the Board of Governors, President of the OD Club, President of the
OD Golfing Society. He has stood in as temporary Bursar at a time of crisis. Despite being in
his late 80`s he probably still supports more College and OD functions than anyone.
John should and deserves to be a Freeman of Dover College as well as Dover !
