Dear Friend of Poltimore House

This is to let you know that Poltimore House and grounds will be open for Heritage Weekend – Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of September from 11am to 4pm. Admission is FREE.

This may be your last chance to take a look inside the House as major building works are due to start soon on the roofs which will put the inside of the House out of bounds for at least a year. If, in the mean time, more finances become available then this might be longer.

There will be many things going on around the site including, on the Saturday only, flights in a tethered balloon. You can also experience the award winning “Organ of Corti” – see their web site for more details – http://www.liminal.org.uk/portfolio/organ-of-corti/

There will be the usual displays but additionally will be a chance to discover the archaeology of Poltimore with the celebration of the first of the University of Exeter’s Community Landscape Project.

There is an opportunity to show your skills with a camera by entering the Poltimore Landscape Photographic competition.

And there will be food – especial the famous cakes (at very reasonable prices) washed down with a hot cup of tea or coffee.

The Poltimore House Trust and the Friends of Poltimore House invite all former students who attended either Poltimore College – 1923-1939 or Dover College 1940-1945

As this will be a Work Party day it will be an opportunity to meet some of the Friends and other Volunteers who have been working on rehabilitating the Chapel and the former Kitchen Block. The Kitchen is now the new Project Centre with workshop, meeting room, archive room and office space.

There will also be the option of attending a performance of Twelfth Night in the grounds at 7pm (with the opportunity to have a picnic from 6pm).

Sunday 17th July will be the last opportunity this year to view the house on an Open Afternoon from 2-4.30 prior to the start of building repairs to the roof.

The Dover Group met for lunch (bar snacks) at Marine Court, Premier Inn, Dover on 28th August when Nigel Pittam (M’67) joined Alan and Brenda Walker,Klara Stefan-Nelson, Peter Kershaw and John Turnpenny. The Matthews were in Ireland following the funeral of their son Andrew.

Only a few met on 25th September – George and Penny Matthews, Peter Kershaw and John Turnpenny.

On 30th October, the Matthews brought along their daughter Helen and grandson James. Peter Kershaw and John Turnpenny were also there and we welcomed Geoffrey Cave-Wood (L’56) and his wife.

The next meeting is on 27th November – 12.30ish – we do not meet at the end of December.

DOVER GROUP – July 2010

Our lunch at the Premier Lodge Hotel on 31^st July was well supported.  Those attending were ODs Gerald Kitiyakara (S’67) from Croydon, David May (S’56) and his wife Eleanor from Beckenham and John Turnpenny (C’41) from Dover.  Ex staff members attending were George & Penny Matthews, Rosemary Rottenbury and Alan & Brenda Walker.  Klara Stefan-Nelson and Peter Kershaw looked in after the meal.

Nigel Pittam (M’67) has been in touch and hopes to come to the next re-union on Saturday 28^th August at 12.30  at the usual place.

We have just had our 4th Saturday in the month lunch at the Marine Court Restaurant Premier Lodge Hotel, Dover.

Alan and Brenda Walker, George and Penny Matthews and Peter Kershaw – all ex staff and I were there.

If we are not at the Marine Court Restaurant, we might be at the Carpathian Restaurant which is on the seaward side of the pedestrian underpass. We
may think about changing to the Carpathian but it is
not so flexible if a lot of people turn up unexpectedly.
