ODGS Match Report April 2022

Old Dovorian Golf Society Match Report 2022

Our first event of 2022 was held at the West Hill Golf Club in appalling weather on 31 March (if you were playing golf or outdoors anywhere in the south, you will remember the snow, sleet, rain, wind and cold that lasted until mid afternoon!). However, four ODs played that day and Mark Rumble managed the conditions better than anyone and came in with a great score and also won nearest the pin. This was a joint event with the Old Lawrentians and involved 10 players in all,

A much better day was at the Kings Hill Golf course a few miles west of Maidstone on Thursday 14 April in very pleasant weather. We had a fairly good turnout of 6 players from the ODGS and 8 players from the Old Lawrentians. The 2021 holder of the Turner Plate, Robert Dicketts was unable to successfully defend his title but came a very respectable equal 3rd with 31 points along with Gilbert Thompson. The winner on countback was David Walter with 35 points and 2nd was Mark Rumble also with 35 points. David therefore won the Turner Plate, some wine and a sleeve of ODGS balls.

This event will be followed by our annual visit to Royal Ashdown Golf Club on Thursday 5 May.  This foursomes match involving morning and afternoon rounds, interrupted by an excellent lunch, is against Kings Canterbury and St Lawrence and this will be its 61st year. We are short of one player or possibly two. If you are available and your handicap is around 20 or less, then please let me know.

I am delighted to announce that we are planning a second golfing event with the College   (involving staff, pupils/students and parents). We have booked Etchinghill Golf Club near Folkestone on the afternoon of Monday 30 May. If you would like to join in the fun, please contact me by email and I will let you have more information etc.

Later in the summer and autumn, we will be visiting North Foreland, Tandridge, Redlibbets, Hever Castle, West Surrey (another foursomes match), and finally Knole Park on 3 November.
