The Lodges Charitable Past

The Old Dovorian Lodge, like all masonic Lodges subscribe to the principle of charity, which is one of the three ‘Great Principles’, namely: – Brotherly Love, Truth and finally Relief:

From earliest times Freemasons have been taught to help those in distress to the best of their ability, but without detriment to their own dependants, and are encouraged to give their support to Charitable organisations outside Freemasonry, as well as Masonic charities, nationally or their local communities, were ever they reside.

Masonic charities are organised to give charitable support, by caring and spending time, and not just money, freely and confidentially, this is given by every able Brother in aid of the sick, infirm, elderly and anyone or family who are in need.

Since the Lodge was consecrated on the 29th January 1937, the Lodge has supported many Charities, and as such have become Patrons of these charities, which are shown with pride on the front of its summons, as shown below: –

Patron of The Royal Masonic Institution for Girls

Patron of The Royal Masonic Institution for Boys

Grand Patron of The Royal Masonic Hospital

Patron of The Grand Charity

Grand Patron of The New Masonic Samaritan Fund

The Lodge also supports a number of smaller and less well-known charities, through the ‘Masters List’. The Masters list, are charities that are chosen by the serving Worshipful Master during his year in office, these charities are chosen for a number of reasons, however they are chosen because they mean something or are relevant to the serving Worshipful Master of the Lodge.

More recently ‘The Master’s List’ has made a number of donations to these, and other worthy charities and organisations, for example: –

Dover College Bursary Fund

Royal Air force Benevolent Fund

The RMBI

The Pace Center

The London Masonic Trust

The Metropolitan Masonic Charity

The Samaritans

The Lodges Charity activities, either through the Grand Charity, or through the Lodge, is coordinated by the Lodges Charity Steward, who keeps the lodge informed of charitable reports from the Grand Charity, as well as reports from specific charities that the Lodge is supporting.
