REPORT ON OLD DOVORIAN GOLFING SOCIETY (ODGS) FOR A DAY AT REDLIBBETS, NEAR BRANDS HATCH, KENT ON FRIDAY 4 SEPTEMBER 2020

At last, we managed to get some golf in 2020! On Friday 4th September nine ODs met up at Redlibbets Golf Club for some, yes you guessed it, golf! The weather was very pleasant and warm with a gently breeze, Perfect! . After a decent bacon bap and coffee and hardly a mention of the traffic on the M25, the first group headed to the 1st tee at 10.30am.

The event was led off by Richard Owen (h/c 12) and Nigel Tubman (current Captain with a h/c  17) and one of the old boys from St Lawrence, Stephen Billings (h/c 3 and who also happens to own the course plus lots of farmland around and is the father of Kent and England cricketer Sam) we all made a good start.

The following ODGS groups consisted of Patrick King, Mark Rumble and Stephen Alleyne and then Philip Barry, Michael Tubman, Rodney Kilbee and Michael Walter. There were 5 other Old St Lawrentians plus their two guests.

With just a touch of local knowledge, Stephen Billings came in with 36 points and therefore just pipping Michael Tubman’s 35 points (h/c 22) who had to settle for 2nd place. A few others were in the 30-34-point range but the majority managed points in the mid-20s. It is quite a tough course but has undergone a lot of improvement over the last couple of years and is well worth playing.

The Captain presented the prizes for players for both Dover College and St Lawrence as their captain was unable to attend. For the ODs, Michael Tubman won the prestigious Turnpenny Jug with a couple of bottles of wine and 3 ODGS balls.

The next OD with a good score was Patrick King on 34 points followed by Richard Owen with 30 points.  Patrick won a bottle of wine and a pack of 3 ODGS balls. Mark Rumble won the nearest the pin competition on the 8th and won 3 balls.

After the golf, we sat down on the large verandah overlooking the 9th green/10th tee and had a decent BBQ of steak, king prawns and salad etc. The sun shone so it was a great end to a great day.

Our next event (for the Crescent Salver) is at Tandridge GC (renowned lunch and golf course) on Wednesday 23 September.

This is followed by the annual Triangular ‘foursomes’ match against St Lawrence and Kings Canterbury at Royal Ashdown on Thursday 1 October.

There are still a couple of places available for Tandridge and the match at Royal Ashdown. The final events of the year are at West Surrey GC for another Triangular match (V All Hallows and Eastbourne old boys) on 12 October and then the AGM and final event at Knole Park, Sevenoaks on 6 November.

If you are interested in more info and/or joining us for a round or play in a match, please contact the Captain, Nigel Tubman at [email protected] or 07919 288727/WhatsApp.
